SOUTHGATE — Not even bone-chilling, sub-zero temperatures outside could halt the Downriver Classic boys swimming and diving meet, which made its annual return on Saturday morning.

Formerly referred to as the News-Herald Invitational, this year’s competition at Southgate Anderson saw 10 teams on hand. Among those were the teams from Riverview and Trenton, each of whom have accounted for six of the previous eight titles, including the last two by the former.

It was another tightly-contested battle between both programs once more on Saturday, but a late surge helped the Pirates of Riverview pull away as Downriver Classic champions.

It’s the third straight Classic crown for Riverview, who finished the day with 302 points. Prior to their current run of such titles (2024 and 2025), the Pirates were also the last program to win consecutive championships at the meet from 2017-18.

Riverview once more found themselves in a back-and-forth affair with Trenton, who finished runner-up overall (266 points). The two squads traded the lead five teams through the first eight events of the morning and early afternoon.

The sixth and final lead change came in 200-yard freestyle relay, which Riverview won thanks to the team of Nathan Johnson, Chase Bunch, William Johnson, and Emmett Todd (1:32). The Pirates then padded their lead over the next two events before settling on the 36-point margin of victory by meet’s end.

After Riverview and Trenton, it was Gibraltar Carlson (206) finishing in third, their best placing at the Downriver Classic since 2020.

Brownstown Woodhaven (176) finished in fourth, followed by Allen Park (158), Wyandotte Roosevelt (115), Allen Park Cabrini (51), Southgate Anderson (43), Taylor-New Boston Huron (30), and Flat Rock (24) to round out the field.

Riverview on Saturday was responsible for half of the dozen first-place finishes, including two of the three relay races. And as was the case each of the last two years prior, the Bucs leaned heavily on the services of seniors Ewan Todd and Nathan Johnson, each of whom won two individual crowns.

The first of two solo titles for Todd came in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05), where he beat out Trenton’s Brandon Watkins (2:10) and Woodhaven’s Matt Calvin (2:16).

Todd then finished first in the penultimate event of the day, that being the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02). Younger brother Emmett finished third in the breaststroke (1:06.86), less than a second behind Allen Park’s Ben Beri (1:06.26).

With his individual efforts, Todd over the past three Downriver Classic meets has placed first in five different events. His day actually began when he joined up with Doug McLaughlin, Isaiah Leisure, and Emmett Todd to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:43).

That meet opener saw Trenton’s Watkins, Nicholas Lear, Aiden Kayal, and Hunter Julian narrowly finish second (1:44), while Carlson’s top foursome of Conor Raftery, Owen Lancaster, Owen Keith, and Jack Dunwoody placed third (1:47).

Nathan Johnson also did his part in leading Riverview to their overall team success on Saturday. The senior first paced the field of 30 swimmers in the 50-yard freestyle (22.31), which saw Trenton’s Julian (23.01) and Carlson’s Keith (23.10) place second and third, respectively.

Johnson then took home the 100-yard freestyle (49.58), which the elder Todd had claimed each of the last two seasons. Allen Park’s Dorrean Beri (50.18) finished in second while Trenton’s Julian (50.66) picked up another top-3 finish there as well.

With the meet title virtually already locked up by then, Riverview had a chance to go 3-for-3 in relays but ultimately settled for runner-up in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:29). That first-place finish went to Trenton’s team of Julian, Kayal, Watkins, and Zach Schoen (3:23), while Woodhaven’s quartet of Calvin, Jaymin Johnson-Lemieux, Alex Vazquez, and Noah Barringer (3:41) finished in third.

That meet finale was one of three event wins for Trenton, who saw Schoen be responsible for the other two earlier in the day.

Schoen began his strong Saturday by first winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:49), beating out Allen Park’s Dorrean Beri (1:53) and Woodhaven’s Barringer (1:54). The senior for the Trojans was also the only competitior to clear five minutes in the 500-yard freestyle (4:58), which had Roosevelt’s Brendan Miciura and Trenton’s Watkins (5:10) place second and third, respectively.

Schoen aside, Trenton saw two more seniors Julian and Watkins each place third or better in four different events on Saturday. Another senior in Lear had two top-5 finishes as an individual, including runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke.

Despite having to surrender his 50 free title from a year ago, Carlson’s Keith did manage to successfully defend his other crown from the 2025 Classic. The senior finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (53.55), where he bested Roosevelt’s Keegan Simmons (56.94) and Anderson’s Cole Cornett (57.97).

The best individual placing elsewhere for Carlson other than Keith came in diving via Jace Starll.

In fact, diving for the third Downriver Classic saw the same two athletes finish 1-2 overall as Starll (443.75) finished second only to Roosevelt senior and now three-time Classic diving champion Eli Shimko (459.45).

Diving was actually one of two event victories on the day for Roosevelt, who got a sterling late-meet performance from the aforementioned Brendan Miciura.

In addition to his second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, Miciura ended what was previously two straight Riverview titles in the 100-yard backstroke by winning that event on Saturday (55.55). Trenton’s Lear finished in second (58.38), while the Pirates’ William Johnson (59.22) finished in third.

Miciura swam in four different events for Roosevelt on Saturday, including three of the final five races. The sophomore was also one leg of the Bears’ 400 free relay to cap off the meet.

Barringer was in many ways the top swimmer for Woodhaven at the Classic. Along with his third-place finish in the 200 free, the junior for the Warriors tallied a fourth-place finish in the 500 free.

Of their 51 team points, Cabrini racked up 42 of them in relays, their best of which was sixth place in the 200 free relay. Individually, junior Rosemary Zahel and senior Colin Maffesoli each placed 10th overall in the backstroke and in diving, respectively.

The aforementioned Cole Cornett was responsible for 15 of the 17 non-relay team points for the hosts from Anderson. The junior also competed in the backstroke and was a member of both the medley and 200 free relays for the Titans.

Neither Taylor-Huron nor Flat Rock accumulated any points outside of the three relay races on Saturday. The former’s best finish was seventh in the 400 free relay, while the latter placed eighth in the 200 free relay.
