Not even bone-chilling, sub-zero temperatures outside could halt the Downriver Classic boys swimming and diving meet, which made its annual return on Saturday morning.

Formerly referred to as the News-Herald Invitational, this year’s competition at Southgate Anderson saw 10 teams on hand. Among those were the teams from Riverview and Trenton, each of whom have accounted for six of the previous eight titles, including the last two by the former.

It was another tightly-contested battle between both programs once more on Saturday, but a late surge helped the Pirates of Riverview pull away and formally three-peat as Downriver Classic champions.
