A longtime local and conference rivalry was renewed for the third time in as many years on Thursday night when Allen Park Cabrini visited Riverview Gabriel Richard for a boys hoops battle.

While the two have met in the state playoffs each of the two seasons prior, Thursday was officially the first regular season meeting between the two schools in the sport since 2020. And both clubs came into the latest affair on extreme ends of the spectrum through this point in the season.

Cabrini is arguably enjoy its best season in program history, having won each of its first 10 games coming in and ranked in the initial Michigan Sports Writers rankings earlier in the week. Meanwhile, a more battle-tested Richard squad was still looking for its first victory of the winter after dropping their first eight contests.

The uptick in competition early proved to pay off some for the host Pioneers, who pulled away late for a 44-37 win over the previously-unbeaten and Division 3 No. 7-ranked Monarchs.
