Dennis Walker OBITUARY

Dennis Ray Walker, a longtime Melvindale resident, devoted family man, union worker and community volunteer, died Jan. 19, 2026. He was 82. Walker was born March 12, 1943, at home in River Rouge, Michigan, to Thomas and Julia Walker. He graduated from Melvindale High School in 1961, where he was active on both the football and track teams, already showing the teamwork and discipline that would mark much of his life. In June 1962, Walker enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a military police officer during the Vietnam War era. His service placed him at pivotal moments in American history: he was on duty during the March on Washington led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and was on standby for the funeral of President John F. Kennedy. He was honorably discharged on May 22, 1965. In December 1970, Walker met Jeanine Wyatt at the United Methodist Church in Melvindale. The two married on March 3rd, 1973, 9 days before his 30th birthday, beginning a partnership that would span more than five decades. Walker was deeply involved in his community. He was a member of the Melvindale Jaycees and the Melvindale Kiwanis Club, coached youth football and baseball from the late 1960s through the 1970s, and volunteered extensively at the Melvindale United Methodist Church food pantry during the 1970s and 1980s. For many years, he ran the Melvindale Memorial Day parade, a role that reflected both his organizational skills and his pride in honoring veterans. He worked at Star Tool & Die before joining and eventually retiring from General Motors, where he was a proud member of the United Auto Workers union. Politically engaged throughout his life, Walker remained active until his death. As a young man, he played the accordion, a talent fondly remembered by family. At home, he was known for his routines and quirks. “When I was younger, on Sundays we’d watch Star Trek and Dad would fall asleep,” said his daughter, Ellen Walker Adams. “If we changed the channel, he would immediately wake up and say, ‘I was watching that!’” Family lore also includes his exuberant reaction to the Detroit Tigers’ 1984 World Series victory, when Walker grabbed a pots and wooden spoons for his children to stand on the front porch, noisily celebrating with neighbors. “At my parents’ house, my dad was the euchre partner we fought over,” Adams said. “If he was your partner, you were guaranteed to steamroll the other team.” Walker was known as a steady and devoted husband, father and grandfather who never missed his children’s activities and who later cared for his parents in their old age. He was also a regular member of the “Old Men/Veterans coffee club,” a group that provided camaraderie and daily conversation. All three of his children graduated from Melvindale High School, too. He is survived by his wife, Jeanine Walker; sons Leonard Walker and Philip S. Walker; daughter Ellen (John) Walker Adams; grandchildren Chloe Haringa, Gwyneth Walker, Philip J. Walker, Grace Adams and Isabelle Adams; and his sister, Linda Bagozzi. A funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 24th at Weise Funeral Home in Allen Park. Interment will take place later at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. Friends and family may donate in Dennis’ memory to the Gleaners Food Bank or any veterans organization of the donor’s choice.
