Nancy, 84, was last seen alive the night before by her daughter Annie. Her family said she was “sharp as a tack” and had no cognitive impairments.

“We have nothing else to go on but the belief that she is here,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in an interview that aired Wednesday on “Today.”

“She’s present. She’s alive, and we want to save her,” he added.

Police have asked for any leads that might help them locate Guthrie, such as alleged ransom notes that were sent to three media outlets, including TMZ.

“When the note comes to us, it’s like any piece of evidence,” Nanos told CBS News. “You give it to us. You give us a lead. We’re going to look at every aspect of that lead and work it as a lead.”

Cops have not confirmed the legitimacy of the ransom notes. The one sent to TMZ demanded millions in Bitcoin, and the outlet reported the Bitcoin address was real.

Authorities have obtained very little information about Guthrie’s whereabouts. After having dinner with her daughter on Saturday night, she was reported missing after not attending church the next morning.

When officers arrived at her house, they found evidence of a crime, including blood inside the residence and signs of a forced entry. What appeared to be a blood trail could be seen on the front steps of the home.

“I believe she was abducted,” Nanos said Monday afternoon. “She didn’t walk from there. She didn’t go willingly.”

Though Guthrie does not have any mental difficulties, she does have physical limitations including high blood pressure and cardiac issues, according to an initial 911 call. She reportedly uses a pacemaker and takes daily medications. Nanos said Guthrie is “very limited in her mobility.”

Her pacemaker last sent a signal to her cellphone — which was found in the residence — around 2 a.m. Sunday, sources told CNN.

Savannah Guthrie will not join NBC’s coverage of the Olympics as the search for her mother continues. She had been scheduled to host coverage of the Opening Ceremony on Friday night.

“Thank you for lifting your prayers with ours for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy, a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant,” Guthrie posted on Instagram. “Raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment. Bring her home.”

CT man convicted of murdering motel owner over $5 dispute https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/04/connecticut-motel-killing-suspect-guilty-alvin-waugh/ Wed, 04 Feb 2026 11:41:21 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/?p=1403630&preview=true&preview_id=1403630 A Connecticut man has been convicted of murder for killing a motel owner to end a fight over $5, authorities said Monday.

Alvin Waugh, a 35-year-old Hartford resident, was found guilty of murder and weapons possession on Friday, the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice said in a press release.

Waugh was convicted of killing Zeshan Chaudhry, 30, on June 27, 2021, at a Motel 6 that Chaudhry owned in Vernon.

Waugh and his girlfriend, who later cooperated with police, were staying at the Motel 6 for about a month when she asked Chaudhry for a pool pass, police said. Chaudhry told her the pass would cost $10, but she said she was only willing to pay $5, according to investigators.

The debate escalated to involve Waugh and another hotel guest, cops said. At one point, Waugh returned to the room, grabbed a homemade handgun and returned to the fracas.

Waugh and Chaudhry then continued arguing outside the pool, where several children were present, according to authorities. Waugh fired one bullet that struck Chaudhry, then unloaded several more into his body, witnesses told police. Chaudhry was struck 11 times and pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

The killing was captured on surveillance video, which also showed Waugh fleeing the area. Cops found his weapon in a nearby wooded area. Waugh surrendered to authorities shortly afterward.

Waugh faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole for the murder conviction. His next hearing is scheduled for April 10.

NJ man posed as ICE agent to rob two people, police https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/01/29/new-jersey-fake-ice-robbery-agent-julio-garcia-barrera/ Thu, 29 Jan 2026 16:06:45 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/?p=1400826&preview=true&preview_id=1400826 A New Jersey man pretended to be an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent to rob two people in Newark, authorities said Wednesday.

Julio Garcia Barrera, 41, was charged with two counts of robbery and two counts of impersonating a public servant, Newark police said Wednesday in a press release. He was arrested Monday.

The first robbery occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Jan. 22, when Garcia Barrera pulled up in a dark-colored SUV on a person walking down the street, cops said. Garcia Barrera exited the vehicle, pulled a flashlight and told the unidentified victim he was an ICE agent, pointing to an emblem on his chest, according to investigators.

Garcia Barrera then put the victim against his vehicle, swiped $500 from the victim’s wallet and took off, police said.

Two days later, Garcia Barrera pulled the same routine on a different street in Newark, stopping next to a pedestrian, shining the flashlight and indicating an “ICE” patch on his jacket, cops said. He robbed the victim of $300 cash and a debit card, which was later used at gas stations in East Orange, according to investigators.

Cops found Garcia Barrera sitting in a parked vehicle on Monday and arrested him in connection with the robberies.

Since President Trump began his second term and launched ICE raids in cities across the country, several people have impersonated ICE agents to commit crimes. The practice became widespread enough that in October, the FBI warned of it and asked real ICE agents to start identifying themselves.

However, the agents and others working alongside them continued to cover their faces and rarely identify themselves, as seen in recent operations in Minneapolis and St. Paul. The agents who fatally shot U.S. citizen Alex Pretti on Saturday have not been identified.

Yale makes tuition free for families making less than $200K https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/01/27/yale-free-tuition-families-making-less/ Tue, 27 Jan 2026 21:14:44 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/?p=1400167&preview=true&preview_id=1400167 Yale University will make tuition free for students whose families make less than $200,000 beginning next academic year, the school announced Tuesday.

Additionally, any student whose family makes less than $100,000 per year will have their full cost of attendance, including housing, meals and course materials, paid for by the school.

“I am thrilled that Yale is making this important investment in affordability,” said the school’s undergraduate admissions dean, Jeremiah Quinlan.

More than 80% of U.S. families will qualify for the free tuition offer, according to Yale’s estimates. The policy will begin for incoming students in the 2026-27 school year, when tuition is set to cost $72,500.

Yale announced the policy one year after another top Ivy League school, Harvard, revealed similar plans. Harvard’s policy began for the current 2025-26 school year and followed the example of other top universities, including Columbia University, which offers free tuition for students from families making less than $150,000.

A 2017 analysis found that 69% of Yale students came from the richest 20% of families in the U.S. — that number was also 67% at Harvard.

The total cost of attendance next year at Yale will be nearly $100,000, according to the school’s website. In addition to the $72,500 tuition, the school estimates $12,000 in housing costs and $9,000 in food spending.

Tuesday’s announcement expands Yale’s financial aid options to more families. The school already offered free cost of attendance to students from families making less than $75,000.

“I know that navigating financial aid can feel overwhelming,” Undergraduate Financial Aid Director Kari DiFonzo said. “Determining a family’s specific ability to contribute toward a college education can be complicated, but these new policies will make it easier for more families to quickly understand their cost.”

Travelers without Real ID soon will be pulled out of TSA line, charged $45 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/01/20/travelers-without-real-id-soon-will-be-pulled-out-of-tsa-line-charged-45/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 11:02:25 +0000 Americans attempting to clear airport security checkpoints without a Real ID or a passport will soon be charged $45, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

The new fee will go into effect on Feb. 1, TSA leaders said. The agency teased a potential $18 fee in federal paperwork late last year, but eventually decided on a significantly higher number.

“The fee was necessary because we needed to modernize the system. We needed to make sure that the system is safe,” Steve Lorincz, TSA’s deputy executive assistant administrator for security operations, told ABC News.

After decades of delays, Real ID requirements finally went into effect in May, but travelers were still allowed to fly without the upgraded identity cards.

The new fee was designed “to address the government-incurred costs,” the agency said in a notice posted to the Federal Register.

After Feb. 1, anyone without a Real ID or passport will need to confirm their identity on the TSA website or through a series of forms at the airport, according to ABC News. Someone who reaches the front of the security line without a Real ID will be pulled out of line and required to fill out the forms in person.

“We still need to go through the process to make sure that we verify who you are. And for whatever reason, if we can’t do that, then you can’t go through the process,” Lorincz told ABC News.

The Real ID Act was passed in 2005 in response to the 9/11 attacks and was initially supposed to be implemented in 2008. However, years of administrative delays continued until 2025. According to the TSA, 94% of travelers already have a Real ID.

FBI Most Wanted fugitive captured in Mexico after 10 years on run https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/01/19/fbi-most-wanted-fugitive-captured-mexico-alejandro-rosales-castillo/ Tue, 20 Jan 2026 00:12:59 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/?p=1397154&preview=true&preview_id=1397154 One of the FBI’s Most Wanted fugitives was captured in Mexico after almost 10 years on the lam for killing his ex-girlfriend, the feds said Saturday.

Alejandro “Alex” Rosales Castillo, 27, was nabbed in Pachuca, FBI officials said. He faces extradition to North Carolina for the murder of Truc Quan “Sandy” Ly Le in 2016.

The 23-year-old Ly Le was killed with a gunshot to the head on Aug. 9, 2016, in a remote area outside Charlotte, and her body was dumped in a ravine, according to authorities. Rosales Castillo, 17 at the time, was quickly identified as a suspect.

Cops found Ly Le’s vehicle in Phoenix on Aug. 15, 2016, and cameras captured Rosales Castillo crossing into Mexico from Nogales, Ariz., the following day. He had not been seen since.

“For more than nine years, he lived a normal life, likely believing he would never be captured, but our experienced investigators never gave up the hunt for justice,” FBI Charlotte agent James Barnacle  said Saturday.

The feds did not release additional details on Rosales Castillo’s arrest. Pachuca, where he was captured, is about 1,000 miles southeast of Nogales, where he entered the country nearly 10 years ago.

Rosales Castillo and Ly Le were co-workers at a restaurant in Charlotte, and he owed her about $1,000 at the time of the murder, police said. They arranged a meeting on Aug. 9 but instead of paying Ly Le, Rosales Castillo allegedly forced her to withdraw even more money, then murdered her and fled in her car to Arizona, cops said.

Rosales Castillo worked with his new girlfriend, then-19-year-old Ahmia Feaster, to carry out the crime, according to investigators. Feaster surrendered to police in October 2016 after about two months on the run.

The following year, a third person, Felipe Ulloa, was arrested in the case and charged with being an accessory to murder after the fact. While Feaster was seen on video fleeing to Mexico with Rosales Castillo, cops did not release further details about Ulloa’s involvement.

In 2020, the Investigation Discovery show “In Pursuit with John Walsh” dedicated an episode to searching for Rosales Castillo in Mexico.

New Jersey to ban cellphones in schools in 2026-27 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/01/11/new-jersey-school-cellphone-ban-law-signed/ Sun, 11 Jan 2026 13:31:32 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/?p=1393402&preview=true&preview_id=1393402 New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed a statewide school cellphone ban into law on Thursday, with the new rule to take effect in the 2026-27 school year.

New Jersey will be one of 23 states, including New York, to ban cellphones from “bell to bell” in elementary, middle and high schools, according to Education Week.

“With today’s bill signing, we are ensuring New Jersey schools are a place for learning and engagement, not distracting screens that detract from academic performance,” Murphy said in a statement.

States have been banning cellphones in response to several studies, which show the phones lead to worse mental health, more distractions and lower achievement for students.

New York’s own ban, which went into effect during the current school year, has been widely praised by educators during its beginning months.

About 83% of schools reported “more positive classroom environments” and “better student engagement” during the first three months of the ban in New York.

“I look forward to implementing this important legislation and continuing to make progress on kids’ online safety and holding Big Tech accountable for the content they push toward our kids,” said New Jersey Governor-Elect Mikie Sherrill, who will be sworn in on Jan. 20.

The New Jersey law requires all public boards of education to develop their own individual plans for enforcing the ban. Under the new law, schools must “prohibit the non-academic use of personal internet-enabled devices on school grounds during the school day.”

The catch-all language, also used in New York, is meant to cover devices such as tablets, smart watches and Meta’s smart glasses.

California farming mogul pleads not guilty to murdering estranged wife https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/01/03/california-farmer-michael-abatti-killing-wife-plea/ Sat, 03 Jan 2026 14:17:45 +0000 A California farming magnate pleaded not guilty last week to murdering his estranged wife amid a nasty two-year divorce battle.

Michael Abatti, 63, stands accused of killing his wife of 31 years, 59-year-old Kerri Ann Abatti, on Nov. 20 at the couple’s second home in Pinetop, Ariz.

He was arrested Dec. 23 in California and extradited to Arizona, making his first court appearance on Wednesday.

Cops said Abatti drove more than six hours from his primary residence in El Centro, Calif., to Pinetop, about 130 miles northeast of Phoenix, before fatally shooting his wife through a kitchen window.

The duo separated in 2023, with Kerri Ann Abatti moving full-time to the Pinetop residence. But after 31 years of marriage and three children, they were going through a long, drawn out and hard-fought divorce, according to authorities.

Michael Abatti’s family has roots in California’s Imperial Valley dating back decades, and the couple lived a lavish lifestyle with multiple properties and international vacations, Kerri Ann Abatti said in divorce filings. She had asked for $30,000 per month spousal support, and the court awarded $6,400 on a temporary basis, according to Los Angeles local news station KTLA.

Michael Abatti has denied any involvement in his wife’s death. At the first court hearing, his lawyers criticized authorities for releasing information about the case to the media, according to Phoenix NBC affiliate KPNX. Abatti was held on $5.5 million bail, which he is expected to post.

Beyoncé becomes a billionaire, 5th musician to reach milestone https://www.thenewsherald.com/2025/12/30/beyonce-billionaire-forbes-cowboy-carter-renaissance/ Tue, 30 Dec 2025 18:05:38 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/?p=1393469&preview=true&preview_id=1393469 She’s putting the “B” in billion.

Beyoncé is now a billionaire, making her the fifth musician to reach the nine-digit mark, according to Forbes.

The 44-year-old superstar joined her husband, Jay-Z, along with Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen and Rihanna in the $1 billion club, Forbes reported Monday.

While Jay-Z’s wealth comes from a variety of sources, and Rihanna earned most of her fortune through her beauty brand, Fenty, Beyoncé’s wealth comes almost entirely from her music career, according to Forbes.

She is similar to Swift in that she controls almost all aspects of her career, allowing her to reap significant profits from her two recent, extremely popular tours promoting her past two albums, “Renaissance” and “Cowboy Carter.”

“I felt like I wanted to follow the footsteps of Madonna and be a powerhouse and have my own empire and show other women when you get to this point in your career you don’t have to go sign with someone else and share your money and your success — you do it yourself,” she said in a 2013 promotional interview.

The company Beyoncé formed in 2008, Parkwood Entertainment, produces all of her music, concerts and documentaries. While this increases the superstar’s front-end costs, it also gives her a greater share of the profits from her work — which remains extremely popular.

Forbes estimated the “Renaissance” tour grossed $600 million, while the “Cowboy Carter” tour pulled in $400 million in ticket sales and at least $50 million from merchandise.

Beyoncé previously said “Renaissance” and “Cowboy Carter” were the first two releases in a planned three-album series exploring different genres, meaning her estimated net worth could climb even higher.
