Almost a year ago, Raleigh Minning opened Kay’s, a gluten-free shop where she sold gluten-free products like her very own Made With Love Donuts, in Wyandotte.
While that storefront recently closed, she has plans in the works to still offer her deliciousness to those who depend on it. As that next step continues to develop, she is now making more than just doughnuts. She’s now the gluten-free hot dog bun provider for Comerica Park.
“There’s such a great need for gluten free in general, for this celiac population and gluten-intolerant baseball fans, so it provides a dietary need for people who are coming to the game,” she said.
She said Comerica Park was previously getting gluten-free hot dog buns from another provider, but that the buns weren’t living up to customers’ expectations. So, when someone reached out to her to see if she’d be willing to source the buns, she developed her own recipe for a gluten-free and dairy-free hot dog bun that wouldn’t crumble.
Instead of creating it like a traditional hot dog bun that would slice open, which often caused crumbling, she crafted a canoe-type shape.
“It was basically like reinventing the wheel,” she said.
Now, her gluten-free hot dog buns are available for purchase at Big League Grill in Sections 108, 130, 213 and 325 at Comerica Park.
She said that supporting local is a great move on Comerica Park’s part, too.
“That’s exactly how a community should be,” she said.
