The body of a missing teenager was discovered Saturday following a coordinated 20-hour search amid extreme cold by authorities.
Ann Arbor police had been looking for the 19-year-old after he was reported missing at 4:30 p.m. Friday. Mattson was last seen without a coat, wearing a light-colored T-shirt, blue jeans and white shoes, walking alone at 1 a.m. Friday in the 1700 block of Hill Street. Temperatures in Ann Arbor plummeted Friday and into Saturday, reaching subzero conditions.
Mattson’s body was recovered in the 1900 block of Cambridge Road around 12:05 p.m. Saturday.
“There are no obvious signs of trauma, and foul play is not suspected at this time,” according to Ann Arbor police.
The Washtenaw County Medical Examiner’s Office has been tasked with determining the cause of death.
Ann Arbor’s police department said in a statement that it extends “its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, as well as the entire University of Michigan community.”
“Crisis support is available to students through the following resources: Wolverine Wellness, University Health Service, and Counseling and Psychological Services,” the department said.
