According to the Mayo Clinic, plantar fasciitis is a condition that causes heel pain by way of an inflamed band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the toes along the bottom of the foot. A plantar fasciitis night splint helps by keeping that band stretched throughout the night, which helps prevent the strain and tearing that worsens the condition.

The Procare ProWedge Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint is an excellent choice. It is well-padded and has several adjustable hook-and-loop straps to make it as comfortable as possible.

What to know before you buy a plantar fasciitis night splint

Plantar fasciitis night splint types

There are two types of plantar fasciitis night splints:

  • Dorsal splints fit on top of the foot and the shin. They aren’t as bulky, and they’re easier to walk in. However, they can put too much pressure on the toes, which can cause poor circulation. They can also slip out of place.
  • Boot splints sit underneath the foot and go up the back of the calf. They are bulky and can be tricky to walk in, though some include tread on the bottom to make walking easier. They can be sweaty and cause some numbness.

Size

Plantar fasciitis night splints come in a variety of sizes. Most are unisex with a sizing chart that gives a range of shoe sizes the splint is meant to fit. Others are one-size-fits-all.

An incorrectly sized splint can cause numbness and tingling on top of general discomfort, so double-check before buying and return it if it isn’t quite right.

What to look for in a quality plantar fasciitis night splint

Adjustable tension

The best plantar fasciitis night splints let you adjust the splint’s tension. This allows you to gradually increase the tension as you get used to it, on top of letting you use the amount of tension necessary for your recovery.

Padding

Considering you wear a plantar fasciitis night splint for several hours in a row, it’s important that it’s comfortable. Most splints use padding in various areas to sustain your comfort. For example, boot splints frequently place padding up and down the splints, and both splints usually pad the straps so they don’t cut into your skin.

Breathability

The best plantar fasciitis night splints are as breathable as possible to avoid excess sweating during the night. Dorsal splints are naturally breathable, but boot splints need to use cutouts or other design choices to keep air flowing.

How much you can expect to spend on a plantar fasciitis night splint

Small, basic splints typically cost $10-$20, while the average splint costs $20-$50. The most advanced and feature-rich splints usually cost $50-$100.

Plantar fasciitis night splint FAQ

Is it difficult to sleep with a plantar fasciitis night splint?

A. It can be uncomfortable for the first few nights, but most users get used to it relatively quickly. If you’ve been using it for at least a week and it’s still uncomfortable or causing any pain or numbness, you likely have the wrong size splint.

Can I walk with a plantar fasciitis night splint on?

A. For the most part, yes. Dorsal splints tend to be easier to walk in because the bottom of your foot is left uncovered, unlike a boot splint. That said, some boot splints have treads on the bottom to help you stay steady while you walk.

Despite this, you shouldn’t walk in any splint for more than moving from one room to the other. You also shouldn’t walk if you’re wearing a splint on both feet.

Will I always have to wear a night splint if I have plantar fasciitis?

A. Most people are able to put the splint away once their plantar fasciitis no longer bothers them. However, it’s always possible that the pain may come back, so keep your splint around just in case.

The best echinacea supplement for daily immune care https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/06/the-best-echinacea-supplement-for-daily-immune-care/ Fri, 06 Feb 2026 05:57:30 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/06/the-best-echinacea-supplement-for-daily-immune-care/ Which echinacea supplements are best?

Herbs have been used as medicine for thousands of years, and even today, they can still play a part alongside conventional medicine. Echinacea is said to be beneficial for immune function and is often taken for colds and other similar winter viruses.

It can be tough to decide which echinacea supplement to buy, especially when it’s your first time buying. If you’re looking for a quality echinacea supplement, Gaia Herbs Echinacea Goldenseal is the top choice.

What to know before you buy an echinacea supplement

Supplement type

Echinacea supplements can come in a range of types of formulations. Capsules are by far the most common type, followed by tablets, liquids and gummies.

  • Capsules: Since the herb is contained inside a capsule, there’s no taste, though people who don’t like to swallow medication can struggle.
  • Tablets: Echinacea tablets are affordable but not always as easily absorbed into the bloodstream as liquid or capsules.
  • Liquids: Echinacea supplements in liquid form are often called tinctures or liquid extracts. They’re great for people who don’t like swallowing capsules and may be absorbed into the bloodstream quicker and more effectively. Although they often contain sweeteners and flavorings, some people can’t abide the taste.
  • Gummies: Although uncommon, you can find gummy echinacea supplements. These usually have lower concentrations of echinacea in them, but they’re aimed at kids who may need a lower dose anyway.

Concentration

The concentration of echinacea is given in milligrams or mg. According to the National Library of Medicine, the recommended daily dosage for adults is 900-1,500 milligrams per day, but this may be taken in up to three doses throughout the day — especially when you’re fighting a cold. Tinctures don’t always have a listed concentration in milligrams, but you should take roughly 2.5 mg three times a day. Check the concentration of any echinacea supplement you’re buying to see how much you’ll need to take.

Doses per pack

When buying echinacea capsules, you can quickly see how many capsules you get in a pack, but this isn’t necessarily the number of doses in a pack. Sometimes, you’ll need to take more than one capsule per dose. For instance, if a pack contains 180 capsules, but each dose is three capsules, then you only get 60 doses in a package, when you might assume it has 180 doses at first glance. Once you get your head around this, it’s easy to find supplements that offer good value for the money.

What to look for in a quality echinacea supplement

Non-GMO and organic

If you like to avoid genetically modified organisms in your diet, look for a non-GMO echinacea supplement. Organic echinacea supplements are less common, but you can find some certified organic options.

Allergen-friendly

Most echinacea supplements are free from common allergens, such as gluten and dairy, but it’s always worth checking before you commit to buying.

Gelatin-free

Echinacea capsules and echinacea gummies can contain animal-derived gelatin, but you can find gelatin-free options. Not only are gelatin-free supplements suitable for vegans and vegetarians, but they can also be taken by people who avoid certain animal products for religious reasons, such as people who follow kosher or halal dietary standards.

How much you can expect to spend on echinacea supplements

You can spend anywhere between $5-$25 on echinacea supplements, depending on factors such as quality, concentration and formulation.

Echinacea supplement FAQ

Does echinacea really work?

A. Echinacea is commonly taken to prevent or reduce the symptoms of colds and other cold-like viruses and infections. Many studies have been done on echinacea over time, and the results are varied.

It seems as if echinacea might reduce the chances of catching colds, but it’s unlikely to reduce the duration of a cold. Still, echinacea is a natural herbal medicine and generally well-tolerated (though it’s possible to be allergic to it), so taking it when you have a cold or to prevent colds in the winter months is unlikely to have any detrimental effects.

Can you take echinacea and vitamin C together?

A. Yes, it’s safe to take echinacea supplements and vitamin C supplements at the same time, so if you’re hoping to fight off colds and other winter viruses, don’t worry about loading up on both. However, there are some drug interactions with echinacea. For instance, it could decrease the effectiveness of immunosuppressant medications. If you’re on any long-term medication, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor before you start taking echinacea supplements.

Fairlife vs. Premier Protein: Which are the best protein shakes? https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/06/fairlife-vs-premier-protein-which-are-the-best-protein-shakes/ Fri, 06 Feb 2026 05:49:01 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/06/fairlife-vs-premier-protein-which-are-the-best-protein-shakes/ Which brand is right for you?

A protein shake after an exhausting workout can be highly beneficial. Protein is the most critical macronutrient required for efficient muscle recovery, so getting enough of it is crucial if you exercise or lift weights often.

If you’re trying to decide which protein shake is right for you, Premier Protein and Fairlife are two popular brands to consider. When comparing Fairlife vs. Premier Protein shakes, both supplements contain significant amounts of protein and other vitamins and nutrients — but the best protein shakes for you will depend on your body and fitness goals.

Shop this article: Premier Protein shake, Fairlife Core Power protein shake and Fairlife Nutrition Plan

Premier Protein shakes

Premier Protein shakes are a great way to supplement your post-workout diet and boost the muscle recovery process, letting you get more out of your workouts and potentially see results faster.

Premier Protein incorporates plenty of protein and other vital nutrients and vitamins in their products, making them an excellent snack or post-workout recovery supplement.

Premier Protein shake pros

Premier Protein shake

One serving of a Premier Protein shake contains 160 calories and 30 grams of protein, which is more than even most whey isolate protein powders, which usually have 20 to 28 grams per serving. There are also many essential amino acids, including 6.6 grams of branched-chain amino acids, which are vital for significant muscle recovery and growth.

They have just 1 gram of sugar per serving and are available in 12 low-fat flavors. From chocolate to vanilla to coffee, every flavor is gluten-free, soy-free and appropriate for keto, bariatric and kosher diets. It’s also worth noting that the coffee flavor contains caffeine and that a handful of flavors can substitute for coffee cream.

Premier Protein Powder 100% Whey Protein 24.5 Ounces

Premier Protein shakes come in ready-made, bottle-size servings, as well as in a protein powder for mixing at your leisure. It’s up to your preference, but it’s important to note that the premixed drinks contain more sugar per serving than the powder.

Premier Protein shake cons

Although Premier Protein shakes contain 24 vitamins and minerals, they don’t have enough nutrients to serve as viable meal replacements. They’re suitable as snacks in between meals and as post-workout protein supplements only.

Premier Protein shakes also contain a high amount of protein, which can be unnecessary and even harmful if you’re already getting enough of it from your regular diet in the form of healthy whole foods. Also, they contain artificial sweeteners, and if you’re lactose-intolerant, you’re going to want to steer clear of Premier Protein shakes.

Fairlife protein shake

Core Power Fairlife Protein Milk Shakes 14-Ounce Pack of 12

The Fairlife Core Power protein shake is an excellent workout supplement for those looking to boost muscle recovery following rigorous exercise. Core Power protein shakes are light, so you won’t feel too full after drinking one, making them an acceptable snack as well.

Fairlife protein shake pros

Fairlife Nutrition Plan High Protein Liquid Shake 11.5-Ounce Pack of 12

The original Fairlife Nutrition Plan shakes have the same protein as Premier Protein shakes at 30 grams per serving. It contains just 150 calories per serving, so it’s 10 fewer than the ready-made Premier Protein shakes. In terms of nutrients, it has nine essential amino acids and several vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, calcium and potassium.

These shakes have plenty of protein, and their low-carb formula makes them an excellent supplement for those seeking to lose weight while maintaining a solid muscle frame. They’re made with ultra-filtered milk, giving them a smooth, creamy texture that’s delicious.

Also, unlike Premier Protein shakes, Fairlife shakes are suitable for anybody who’s lactose intolerant.

Fairlife protein shake cons

They only come in seven flavors, but some users argue that it doesn’t taste as good as other comparable shakes. They’re also pricey, so you might get more bang for your buck with Premier Protein shakes. Also, there isn’t as much diversity in terms of products as with Premier Protein products.

Should you get Premier Protein or Fairlife protein shakes?

Both Premier Protein and Fairlife protein shakes work well as workout supplements since they both have plenty of protein and amino acids necessary for muscle recovery. They both also have vitamins and minerals that make them suitable as meal supplements or daytime snacks.

Fairlife shakes are easier on the stomach since they’re lactose-free, so while Premier Protein shakes are also light, Fairlife is arguably the better choice for those following strict diets. However, Premier Protein shakes are available in more unique flavors, so you can try different ones until you find one you like.

Ultimately, both shakes will give you a protein boost sufficient enough to aid in the muscle recovery process, especially if you exercise or lift weights consistently. Although Fairlife shakes have more calories and protein per serving, making them slightly better for those with muscle-building goals, Premier Protein shakes are low in fat, so they’re excellent for anyone seeking weight loss.

Best chaga tea https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/04/best-chaga-tea/ Thu, 05 Feb 2026 02:58:19 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/05/best-chaga-tea/ Which is the best chaga tea?

The idea of drinking mushroom tea might not initially sound appealing, but chaga has been used in folk medicine for hundreds of years. Chaga — Inonotus obliquus — is a fungus that grows on birch trees in northern regions of the world like Siberia, Canada and Northern Europe. It has a black outer crust with an orange flesh, which gives the tea a reddish-brown color. It offers many potential benefits including anti-inflammation, cancer prevention, improved liver function and so on.

Despite there being many great chaga tea options, we slightly preferred the Maine Chaga Tea Fine Mushroom Powder to the others. The chaga is sourced from the Northern United States and Canada, and it is wild-harvested with the black crust intact in the extract.

What to know before you buy chaga tea

What are the benefits of drinking chaga tea?

Mushrooms are a great source of essential nutrients like Vitamin D, potassium and folic acid. Chaga not only offers many essential nutrients, but it has also been found to boost the immune system, assist with preventing tumors, promote liver and digestive health and reduce inflammation. The most widely studied benefit seems to be cancer prevention, but people take it for a plethora of different reasons and treat it as an elixir of sorts.

How does chaga tea taste?

Most people don’t enjoy the taste of chaga tea by itself. It tastes similar to other mushrooms with an earthy flavor and a tinge of bitterness. It is by no means an awful flavor, but it isn’t particularly delicious either. One way to improve the taste is to add a natural sweetener such as honey, maple syrup or stevia to the mix.

Do chaga mushrooms sourced from different regions have different effects?

It is pretty common to see chaga sourced from a particular region or area such as Maine, Canada or Siberia. It can lead to confusion since it could suggest a Siberian chaga tea might have different health benefits than a Canadian chaga tea. However, a study done on French chaga found that the nutrients and compounds found in chaga from other regions were also found in the French chaga. You can buy chaga from any region and rest assured that it will offer the same health benefits.

What to look for in a quality chaga tea

No additives

The best chaga teas available online contain just chaga tea with no additional additives. Certain chaga teas will have just the chaga extract, while others will contain the black crust — which contains a high concentration of melanin — from the exterior of the fungus. Both options are fine as long as no additional ingredients are added to the tea.

Harvested from wild trees

Chaga can come naturally harvested or farmed. There are claims that the farmed chaga doesn’t contain as much of the black crust and that the naturally harvested chaga has the most antioxidants. If this is a concern, it would be wise to try to buy a tea that is naturally harvested.

Ground or tea bags

Chaga tea can come in a finely ground powder or extract or pre-packed in tea bags. This comes down to personal preference. Those who want a quick and easy experience can go with pre-packed tea bags. Others might prefer the ground chagra despite the extra work. The advantage to going with a ground chaga extract is that you can decide exactly how much chaga is in each serving.

How much you can expect to spend on chaga tea

Chaga teas range from around $8-$30 for about 18 tea bags or 5 ounces of extract. The fine powder tends to be more expensive than the prepackaged tea bags.

Chaga tea FAQ

Are there any risks with consuming chaga?

A. Chaga is very safe for most people to consume. However, people taking insulin should consult with a doctor before buying chaga tea since chaga lowers blood sugar.

How many times a day should I drink chaga tea?

A. It is always best to start with one cup per day to see how you react to it. Once your body is used to it, you can drink chaga tea up to three times a day during the morning, afternoon and evening.

Best hand massager for carpal tunnel https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/04/best-hand-massager-for-carpal-tunnel/ Thu, 05 Feb 2026 02:49:16 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/05/best-hand-massager-for-carpal-tunnel/ Which hand massager for carpal tunnel is best?

Massage therapy is an effective treatment to reduce the uncomfortable symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Unfortunately, it can be costly and difficult to find the time to schedule a regular massage treatment with a therapist. Fortunately, there are several electric hand massagers that can be purchased to relieve carpal tunnel pain by yourself. An electric massager for carpal tunnel syndrome can be used at home, in the office or when traveling. The top choice for a cordless, electric hand massager that can be used on the go, is the Comfier Wireless Hand Massager With Heat. However, there are a variety of other hand massagers ideal for carpal tunnel syndrome that should be considered for their price point and effectiveness for carpal tunnel pain relief.

What to know before you buy a hand massager for carpal tunnel

What is carpal tunnel syndrome

According to MedlinePlus, the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome typically begin gradually, then intensify over time. The primary symptom associated with carpal tunnel syndrome is numbness and tingling in the fingers or hands. Usually, the thumb and index fingers will be affected, although the middle and ring fingers may also begin to have tingling sensations over time. It should be noted that the pinkie finger will not be affected by carpal tunnel syndrome pain. The numbness and tingling may feel like an electric shock and that sensation might travel from the wrist up the arm. The position that the wrist is held in will either relieve or create carpal tunnel syndrome pain. This is due to the pressure that is placed on the median nerve that passes through the carpal bones when the wrist is flexed.

The carpal tunnel, located in the wrist, is a narrow passageway that is surrounded by bones and ligaments. The anatomy of the wrist is responsible for the high susceptibility to nerve pain with repetitive hand motions that require wrist flexion. Over time, compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel will lead to the hands feeling numb and becoming weak.

Benefits of massage for carpal tunnel syndrome

Massage therapy can be used to prevent and relieve carpal tunnel-related symptoms. Specifically, massage therapy has been shown to reduce inflammation, pain and the numbness and tingling sensations. A massage therapist will lengthen the muscles and fascia in the neck, shoulders, arm, wrist and hands in a session focused on carpal tunnel syndrome. A therapist may also use trigger point work to reduce tension in the soft tissues of the shoulder and arm, as well as stressing the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints in increased mobility.

A hand massager is a great option for anyone who does not have the time or budget to work with a massage therapist to alleviate carpal tunnel syndrome pain. Unfortunately, a hand massager will only work on the hand and wrist muscles, rather than addressing the entire neck, shoulder and upper arm tissues which are involved in carpal tunnel syndrome pain. Despite hand massagers’ limited focus on the wrist joint, many find them beneficial for reducing carpal tunnel-associated symptoms such as inflammation, weakness, numbness and tingling.

Safety considerations

When used as directed, a hand massager is a safe and effective treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome. However, there are a few safety considerations to keep in mind when operating a hand massager for carpal tunnel syndrome pain.

Hand massagers can cause an electric shock

Any massage device that uses electricity can cause an electric shock. Always inspect wires for small tears or exposed components before use or when purchasing secondhand. Never use an electric hand massager with wet hands or skin, for example, immediately after bathing.

Hand massagers might not work for specific issues

Consult with a medical professional before investing in a hand massager for carpal tunnel syndrome. Only a professional can confirm that pain is related to carpal tunnel syndrome as opposed to something else. Not all chronic wrist pain can be effectively relieved with a hand massage, especially if the pain is caused by a condition other than carpal tunnel syndrome.

Using a hand massager during pregnancy

Carpal tunnel syndrome is common during pregnancy, leading pregnant women to search for natural remedies. Massage and electric hand massagers are generally safe, though a pregnant woman should consult their doctor before receiving a massage. Unless a doctor confirms it is OK, reflexology pressure points should be avoided. Specific to hand massagers for carpal tunnel syndrome, the reflexology pressure points in the wrist and in between the fingers should be avoided until cleared by a doctor.

What to look for in a quality hand massager for carpal tunnel

Heat therapy

Research confirms that a low-level heat wrap is an effective treatment for conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome that cause wrist pain. This makes heat therapy a great addition to hand massagers for carpal tunnel syndrome. Unlike cold compresses such as ice, which promote healing of damaged tissues, heat addresses inflammation and relaxes the blood vessels, which increases circulation.

Compression types

The level of compression and the mechanics that create the compression vary by hand massager manufacturer. Some find very strong compressions beneficial to manage their carpal tunnel syndrome pain. Others find firm compressions to be uncomfortable and aggravate their associated carpal tunnel pain. Anyone who is unsure about the type of compression that works best for their carpal tunnel treatment should look for a massager that offers a variety of compression levels. Alternatively, they can purchase a hand massager with a generous exchange policy in case they discover that they need a stronger or lighter compression level.

Ease of use

There are a variety of factors that make hand massages for carpal tunnel syndrome easier to use than others. However, portability is at the top of the list when it comes to a hand massager that is easy to use. Carpal tunnel pain can be debilitating, especially when it sneaks up at work or while traveling. A portable hand massager can be charged by an electrical source and then used later without needing to be tethered to the wall by a cord. This allows the user to store their massager in a bag and pull it out later if needed on the go.

How much you can expect to spend on a hand massager for carpal tunnel

The price range for a hand massager for carpal tunnel is $60-$200, depending on the massaging mechanisms.

Hand massager for carpal tunnel FAQ

What is the difference between thoracic outlet syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome?

A. Carpal tunnel syndrome and thoracic outlet syndrome can be easily confused because they both cause similar symptoms. Carpal tunnel is identified by the compression of the median nerve, while thoracic outlet involves the compression of the neurovascular bundle. While both syndromes cause numbness and tingling, only thoracic outlet syndrome causes the hands to become cold due to a lack of circulation.

How should a hand massager be cared for?

Best liquid iron supplement https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/03/best-liquid-iron-supplement/ Wed, 04 Feb 2026 02:54:36 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/04/best-liquid-iron-supplement/ Which liquid iron supplements are best?

While most people get the iron they need from their diet, certain conditions or illnesses may increase your risk of a deficiency. This makes it necessary to use iron supplements to boost your immune function, prevent anemia and eliminate fatigue.

If you’re considering taking an iron supplement, you can take a pill. However, liquid iron supplements are often more pleasant-tasting, easier to absorb and gentler on the stomach. A top pick is Floradix Iron + Herbs, Energy Support, Liquid Extract, which is easy to digest and tastes pleasant.

What to know before you buy a liquid iron supplement

Iron deficiency

If you are not getting all the iron your body needs, it will eventually lead to an iron deficiency, a common cause of anemia. Some of the symptoms of iron-deficiency anemia include fatigue, weakness and paleness. If you suspect that you have this type of anemia, consult your doctor. A blood test may be done to check your condition. To treat iron deficiency anemia, you can take an iron supplement, which usually corrects the deficiency within three to six weeks. You may continue taking the supplement for up to six months after your blood count has returned to normal to completely restore your iron reserve.

Tooth discoloration

While a liquid iron supplement may be gentle on the stomach and is more easily absorbed than tablets, it usually also comes with side effects like tooth staining, which may eventually damage the teeth. There are a couple of ways to manage this unwanted side effect: First, you can dilute the supplement in water before taking it. This way, you can reduce the chance of the pigmented agent in the iron staining your teeth. Another option is to use a straw for drinking the liquid, which can help bypass the teeth and prevent staining. In either case, you can drink plenty of water after taking the supplement to wash away any iron residue remaining in your mouth.

Plant-based diet

Vegetarians are often at risk of iron deficiency because the iron found in plant foods is less absorbable, and they don’t consume meat, poultry or fish, which are rich iron sources. People who menstruate that are on a vegan or vegetarian diet are also at higher risk of iron deficiency. If you’re on a plant-based diet, one way to reduce your risk of an iron deficiency is to eat plant-based food containing iron and vitamin C, since the latter can increase iron absorption. Another way is to take an iron supplement.

What to look for in a quality liquid iron supplement

Ingredients

Vitamin C can help improve iron absorption, so you should consider iron supplements that include this vitamin in the formulation. Some iron supplements may also combine vitamin B complex with iron to boost the functioning of the immune and nervous systems. In contrast, others feature fermented probiotics and enzymes to prevent any iron-related gastrointestinal side effects, even when taken on an empty stomach.

Taste

While there are plain liquid iron supplements that aren’t pleasant-tasting, some palatable options exist, including orange and grape flavors to enhance their taste. These great-tasting liquids can be beneficial for children and adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets. However, if you choose the plain liquid iron option, you can mix it with your beverage of choice. Adding the supplement to a fruit and vegetable puree is another excellent way to make it taste good.

Type of iron

Iron supplements usually come in different forms of iron. The most popular ones are ferric or ferrous salts such as ferrous sulfate, ferrous gluconate, ferric citrate and ferric sulfate. The ferrous salts are more easily absorbed than the ferric salts. Other forms of iron in iron supplements include heme iron polypeptides (HIP), carbonyl iron, iron amino-acid chelates, and polysaccharide-iron complexes (PIC), which have fewer gastrointestinal side effects when compared to the ferric and ferrous salts.

How much you can expect to spend on a liquid iron supplement

For a bottle that contains between 450 and 500 milliliters of liquid iron supplement, you can expect to pay between $9 and $40, with the more expensive options often containing added vitamins and minerals.

Liquid iron supplement FAQ

What are the side effects of liquid iron supplements?

A. Similar to other iron formulations, liquid iron may cause nausea and constipation, especially when you take it on an empty stomach. However, one side effect unique to liquid iron supplements is stained teeth due to the pigmented agent in the formulation.

Do liquid iron supplements work quickly?

A. While liquid iron supplements may be absorbed faster than other oral formulations, factors like the time of the day when taken and the food taken with the supplement often determine how quickly they work.

Best green coffee bean supplement https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/03/best-green-coffee-bean-supplement/ Wed, 04 Feb 2026 02:39:07 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/04/best-green-coffee-bean-supplement/ Which green coffee bean supplement is best?

Green coffee beans are just unroasted coffee beans, and they offer many of the same benefits as a good cup of coffee. Some green coffee bean supplements add extra ingredients for even more benefits. They also come in a variety of forms so you can choose what’s easiest for you to take.

The best green coffee bean supplement is the NatureWise Green Coffee Bean Extract. It’s decaffeinated to level out the energy and is gluten-free and vegan-friendly.

What to know before you buy a green coffee bean supplement

Forms

Green coffee bean supplements typically come in three forms.

  • Capsules are the most common, as they tend to be easier to swallow, and the capsules dissolve quickly for faster absorption. They can be on the large side, though, a problem for those who struggle to swallow pills. You can always pull the capsules apart, but you would be better off buying a powder at that point.
  • Tablets are made by pressing powder into a solid form. They can be even more difficult to swallow than capsules for some people. You can crush them back into powder form if necessary, but once again, it would be best to buy a powder instead.
  • Powders come in large bags, preferably with a measured scoop included, and are perfect for adding to your preferred morning drink. You’re likely to taste it though, even if you don’t add much.

Dosage

Green coffee bean supplements come in a variety of dosages, from as little as 200 milligrams to as much as 800 milligrams per serving with many recommending you take more than one dose per day. Another frequent recommendation is to take your dose 30 to 60 minutes before a meal.

You should always ask your doctor before starting a green coffee bean supplement regimen, but failing that, start with the lowest possible dose and work your way up until you see a positive effect without experiencing side effects.

Quantity

On top of the question of dosage is the question of how many doses a bottle or bag may contain. Some bottles can contain as few as two weeks’ worth, while others can have a month or more.

Always check the number of doses included against the price before purchasing anything.

What to look for in a quality green coffee bean supplement

Organic

An organic green coffee bean supplement contains no pesticides, insecticides or any other harmful artificial ingredients that may have been used on the beans as they grew. Make sure that the organic claim is certified by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Caffeine

Coffee beans, roasted or still green, contain caffeine. That’s a driving factor behind their place in many people’s morning routine. Just like cups of coffee, green coffee bean supplements can be decaffeinated.

This gives you a choice: You can choose caffeinated supplements to help boost your energy or decaffeinated supplements if you dislike how caffeine makes you feel.

Chlorogenic acid

This ingredient, natural to green coffee beans but removed by the roasting process, is what aids in weight loss. The best green coffee bean supplements will have a 45% to 50% chlorogenic acid concentration.

How much you can expect to spend on a green coffee bean supplement

They can cost as little as $10 or as much as $30. Price typically matches how much supplement is included. Some brands also charge more for the name.

Green coffee bean supplement FAQ

Are green coffee bean supplements safe?

A. Generally, yes, though there are some situations where it may be unsafe to take. The biggest concern is if you’re taking blood thinners, as green coffee bean supplements can exacerbate this effect. Always check with your doctor before you start a supplement regimen.

Do green coffee bean supplements have side effects?

A. They may, though, like with any supplement or medication, not everyone will experience them. The most common side effects come from the caffeine naturally found in coffee beans, such as anxiety, jitters and digestive issues like diarrhea or constipation. Other possible side effects may include dehydration or headaches.

A tick removal kit should be a staple in your house this spring https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/02/a-tick-removal-kit-should-be-a-staple-in-your-house-this-spring/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 03:05:41 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/03/a-tick-removal-kit-should-be-a-staple-in-your-house-this-spring/ Tick season is a bit less frightening when you’re prepared with a tick removal tool

Spring may be the season for warming weather and blooming flowers, but that’s not all that emerges this time of year. Unfortunately, it’s also when ticks are extremely active, particularly in wooded areas. Not only do these parasitic arachnids give you the creeps, but ticks can carry an array of diseases.

You may not be able to avoid ticks this spring, but you can be prepared if one does bite you or embed itself in your skin. We turned to BestReviews medical expert Dr. Michael Huynh for advice on the steps you should take for treatment and the right tick removal tool for the job.

Risks posed by tick bites

If you think ticks are frightening, understanding the possible ramifications that can occur once a tick bites or embeds in the skin will heighten your awareness. Huynh warned of the diseases that are carried by some ticks.

“Tick bites are often quite scary. There are many tick-borne illnesses that arise from a tick bite, such as anaplasmosis, babesiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and the most well-known, Lyme disease,” he said. The types of ticks that you may encounter depend on where you live, he continued. “Different types of ticks in different parts of the U.S. carry certain diseases, and it is important to know which disease is endemic to a certain area.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ticks are commonly found in the U.S. in the Atlantic coastal and Gulf Coast regions. The agency provides detailed information on its site about the common types of ticks and where they are typically found throughout the country.

How to remove a tick

Occasionally, tick bites will happen. Huynh provided the procedures that are necessary for safely treating a tick bite.

“To minimize the retention of tick parts onto the skin during removal, you should use fine-tip tweezers to grasp the tip as close to the skin surface as possible, where the tweezers should grasp the head of the tick and avoid compressing the tick’s body to prevent pushing bacteria into the skin and bloodstream. Use steady pressure, but try not to squeeze or crush the tick, and try not to jerk or twist the tick. After removing the tick, you should wash the area with alcohol or soap and water,” he said.

After removing ticks from your skin, there are still some steps to take to catch any further issues that may occur.

How to treat a tick bite

Occasionally, tick bites will happen. Huynh provided the procedures that are necessary for safely treating a tick bite.

“Close monitoring of the bite area should be done within the next 30 days to see if there’s any development of a rash, especially a rash that looks like a target lesion, also known as erythema migrans, commonly seen in Lyme disease,” Huynh said.

“After removing a tick, you should consult your physician to determine whether you will need prophylactic antibiotics, as treatment usually starts within the first 72 hours of removal,” he said.

TickCheck Premium Tick Removal Kit

Huynh likes that this kit comes with a tick identification card to help you identify different types of ticks. It includes a tick removal tool for grasping ticks, tweezers with precision tips for ticks of different sizes and a storage case to keep the tools protected when not in use.

Off! Deep Woods Insect Repellent

Off! Deep Woods Insect Repellent

According to Huynh, covering as much of the skin as possible when outdoors is the best defense against tick bites. However, he advised that carefully applying a DEET-based insect repellent is an alternative that is also likely to prevent ticks from biting and embedding.

Clearblue vs First Response pregnancy test https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/02/clearblue-vs-first-response-pregnancy-test/ Tue, 03 Feb 2026 02:49:43 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/03/clearblue-vs-first-response-pregnancy-test/ Is a Clearblue or First Response pregnancy test better?

Time stops in the moments waiting for a home pregnancy test to deliver the answer. This is one of the most vulnerable times in anyone’s life, and it’s critical that the pregnancy test you choose is accurate and fast.

When taking a pregnancy test, you want the fastest, most accurate results from a test you can trust. Because both brands are reliable, it all boils down to cost, how quickly you want your results and whether the test is easy to use.

Clearblue

Clearblue is the bestselling home pregnancy test across the globe. They not only offer pregnancy testing but also fertility tests for those trying to conceive.

In terms of testing technology, Clearblue claims to be more than 99% accurate when the test is administered correctly from the first day of a missed period. The company is a pioneer in terms of easy-to-read tests.

Clearblue pros

  • You can get results six days before your missed period with the Clearblue Early Detection Pregnancy Test.
  • The Floodguard feature is a critical component of Clearblue’s accuracy. It collects excess urine and returns it to the test to minimize errors.
  • For easy interpretation, the digital readout offers a clearly written “pregnant” or “not pregnant” result.
  • The handle is long and easy to grip and the tip is extra wide to make collecting urine simpler.

Clearblue cons

  • The Clearblue Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test recommends that you wait a full three minutes to confirm a “not pregnant” result.

This early detection test provides results six days before your missed period. It’s over 99% accurate from the day you expect your period. The handle is long and the tip is wide for easy sampling, and the pink lines are clear and easy to read. Three tests are included in this pack. It is recommended that you wait three full minutes before reading your results.

Best Clearblue Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test

Clearblue Rapid Detection Pregnancy Test

Get a positive result in as little as one minute with this rapid test. It is easy to use with an ergonomic handle and a wide, color-changing tip and comes in a pack of three. The patented Floodguard feature reduces testing errors, which increases accuracy. Test up to five days before the expected date of your period. Though your results may appear after a minute, it is recommended that you wait three full minutes to confirm a “not pregnant” result.

First Response

First Response is another pregnancy test that is trusted by many couples who are trying to conceive.

Like Clearblue, they also claim that their tests are more than 99% accurate and can be used six days before your missed period.

First Response pros

  • You can test up to six days before your missed period with the First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test and the First Response Gold Digital Pregnancy Test.
  • First Response is connected to an app that can help you confirm the results of your test if you want to be sure.
  • It offers a rapid test that can get you results in just one minute (when testing from the day of your missed period or after).
  • The handle is comfortable to hold.

First Response cons

  • The tip is skinnier compared to Clearblue’s tests.
  • The digital test only offers a reading of ”yes” or “no.”

Best First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test

First Response Early Result Pregnancy Test

This test gives results six days before your missed period. The lines are sharp, clear and easy to read and results are ready in three minutes. The handle is comfortable. Scan your results and send them to the EasyRead app for confirmation. It comes with three tests.

Best First Response Rapid Result Pregnancy Test

First Response Rapid Result Pregnancy Test

Get test results in just one minute on the day of your missed period with this two-pack of rapid tests. The slimline test is comfortable to hold and easy to position. Results are up to 99% accurate from the first day of your missed period.

Best First Response Gold Digital Pregnancy Test

First Response Gold Digital Pregnancy Test

The digital readout on the stick features a clear “yes” or “no.” It has a “test is working” feature to let you know your hCG levels are being measured. You can receive accurate results six days before your missed period, and results come in three minutes or less. It comes with two tests.

Should you get Clearblue or First Response?

Clearblue and First Response are both trusted consumer brands that claim to have the same level of accuracy (more than 99%), and both offer tests that can give you results six days before your missed period (five days before the expected period).

Clearblue scores extra points for its much wider tip and longer handle, which makes it easier to collect urine. Clearblue also offers a digital test that is about $2 cheaper per test than First Response’s digital option. However, Clearblue’s digital test is the only one of the three Clearblue tests we looked at that promises it can give results in as little as 60 seconds (though it may still take three minutes). If you want results in a minute for a better price, the First Response Rapid Results Pregnancy Test is for you.

However, no matter which test you take, if you want to be absolutely sure of your pregnancy status, following up with a doctor’s visit and a blood test is the best option.

10 intriguing facts you should know about Pedialyte https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/01/10-intriguing-facts-you-should-know-about-pedialyte/ Mon, 02 Feb 2026 03:14:46 +0000 https://www.thenewsherald.com/2026/02/02/10-intriguing-facts-you-should-know-about-pedialyte/ Replace minerals

Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium and chloride. They can carry an electric charge and help your body function properly. Electrolytes are in your blood, urine and sweat. If your body becomes dehydrated, your electrolyte levels drop. When this happens, a whole host of problems can begin ranging from muscle cramps to irregular heartbeats. Because it only contains trace amounts of electrolytes, water doesn’t solve the problems created by dehydration. You also have to replace your electrolytes. To do this, you need a beverage that has a balance of water and electrolytes, such as Pedialyte.

What is in Pedialyte?

Pedialyte is a rehydration drink. Besides water, it contains sodium, potassium and chloride. These are the essential electrolytes that your body needs when it gets dehydrated. For energy, it contains dextrose. There is also citric acid in Pedialyte, along with natural and artificial flavoring.

Who and what is Pedialyte for?

Pedialyte has suffered a little from ineffective marketing and doctors’ recommendations. This has led to a belief that Pedialyte is only for sick children. While helping kids stay hydrated during the stomach flu is one of Pedialyte’s primary purposes, it can also help adults when they get sick. It’s also useful to athletes of all ages for rehydration after intense workouts.

Pedialyte vs. Gatorade

Pedialyte and Gatorade both rehydrate the body and contain similar ingredients. Where they differ is the amount of each ingredient. Pedialyte contains higher amounts of sodium and potassium than Gatorade. It also contains less sugar than Gatorade in all but the sugar-free variety. Additionally, some Pedialyte contains zinc, which helps support the immune system.

How to use Pedialyte

Pedialyte has balanced ratios of sugars and electrolytes. Take it according to the directions on the packaging. If you are under a doctor’s care, those directions may supersede the printed instructions. Do not dilute Pedialyte with fruit juices, sodas or water. Adding other fluids will lessen its effectiveness. Adding sweetened fluids could also make stomach flu symptoms worse.

As effective as Pedialyte is, it’s not recommended as a daily drink. The ingredients that make it a top choice for rehydration can be too much for regular use. In other words, if water is adequate, that should be your first choice for staying hydrated.

Does Pedialyte have any side effects?

Some may experience side effects when taking Pedialyte. The most common is mild nausea and vomiting. Often, you can avoid these side effects by drinking slowly. If they do not diminish, contact your doctor.

Some of the more serious but rare side effects include dizziness, weakness, swelling in the ankles and feet, mood changes and seizures. Report these to your doctor promptly.

Additionally, some may have a serious allergic reaction to Pedialyte. Seek medical attention immediately if you have any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. This includes rashes, itching, swelling, severe dizziness or trouble breathing.

There are different types of Pedialyte

There are over a dozen different types of Pedialyte for different uses. Some of these include:

Pedialyte AdvancedCare

Pedialyte Zero Sugar

Pedialyte Electrolyte Powder Packs

FAQ

Does Pedialyte stop vomiting and diarrhea?

A. No, but it does help prevent dehydration that can occur as a result of these symptoms.

Does Pedialyte cure hangovers?

A. No, but it may help you feel less miserable by replacing the fluids, carbohydrates and electrolytes lost when you drink alcohol.

Can I freeze Pedialyte?

A. No. If you want that, use Pedialyte Freezer Pops.

Can I give Pedialyte to my dog?

A. No. The high level of sodium can be harmful and the sugars can cause problems in dogs with existing health conditions. If your dog is sick enough for you to consider medication, call your veterinarian first.
