Michigan gas prices dropped 12 cents since last week, at $2.73 per gallon for regular unleaded, AAA – The Auto Group announced Monday.

The price is 43 cents less than a month ago and 38 cents below the same time in 2024, officials said.

Motorists in the state are paying an average of $40 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline, AAA said.

“For a fourth straight week, the national average price of gasoline has declined, as conditions remain ripe for some of the lowest seasonal gas prices in five years,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, in a release.

“Oil prices continue to struggle amid rising U.S., Canadian, and OPEC+ oil production, while refinery output remains near some of the highest seasonal levels in years— factors that are likely to keep gas prices under pressure over the weeks ahead. We’re continuing to see some gas prices below $2 per gallon in the nation’s cheapest states, now at more than 125 gas stations. Diesel prices have also seen some relief, though inventories remain tight, keeping the national average higher than a year ago.”

AAA says drivers traveling over the holiday period of Dec. 20 through Jan. 1 can expect lower gas prices compared to last Christmas, when the state average was $3.06. AAA is forecasting nearly 3.5 million out of 4 million total Michigan travelers will use the roads to reach their destinations.

AAA reports the national pump price is at $2.86.

Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.80 per gallon. That’s about 6 cents less than last week and 27 cents less than the same time in 2024.

The national average price of diesel dropped by 6 cents in the last week and stands at $2.79 per gallon, GasBuddy officials said.

The most expensive gas price averages are in Ann Arbor ($2.87), Metro Detroit ($2.80) and Jackson ($2.71).

The least expensive are in Traverse City ($2.54), Flint ($2.60) and Marquette ($2.64).

“As the Michigan average hits a new 2025-low, drivers hitting the road for the holidays will enjoy some of the lowest gas prices of the year,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group.
