Michigan gas prices climbed 3 cents since last week, at $2.85 per gallon for regular unleaded, AAA – The Auto Group announced Monday.

The price is 19 cents less than a month ago and 20 cents below the same time in 2024, officials said.

Motorists in the state are paying an average of $42 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline, AAA said.

“For the third straight week, the national average price of gasoline has fallen, once again setting a new multi-year low,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

“Just ahead of Christmas, the national average stands at its lowest level since March 12, 2021, delivering weekly savings of nearly $400 million compared to this time last year. Gas prices are now lower in a majority of states, and the good news is that the downward trend may continue into the closing innings of 2025, with further declines likely across much of the country. That’s being driven by refineries wrapping up maintenance and boosting output to near summer highs, increasing fuel supply, while additional oil production from OPEC has pressured crude prices lower as well.”

AAA says drivers traveling over the holiday period of Dec. 20 through Jan. 1 can expect lower gas prices compared to last year, when the state average was $3.06. AAA is forecasting nearly 3.5 million out of 4 million total Michigan travelers will use the roads to reach their destinations.

AAA reports the national pump price is at $2.91.

Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.83 per gallon. That’s about 3 cents less than last week and 16 cents less than the same time in 2024.

The national average price of diesel dropped by a nickel in the last week and stands at $3.62 per gallon, GasBuddy officials said.

The most expensive gas price averages are in Ann Arbor ($2.94), Lansing ($2.87) and Jackson ($2.87).

The least expensive gas price averages are in Marquette ($2.66), Traverse City ($2.68) and Flint ($2.77).

“Michigan drivers are seeing a small rise in average gas prices, with some cities paying more and others paying less,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group.
