Students at the University of Central Florida were evacuated on Sunday after officials said the freezing temperatures impacted the chilled water system.
In a post on social media, the UCF Police Department said some residents of the Towers community on UCF’s main campus were temporarily displaced as teams worked to repair the system.
By late Sunday afternoon students were allowed to go back to their dorms and workers identified the cause of the issues.
“Our teams have identified the cause of the issue in Towers 1, 3 and 4 as a malfunction involving hallway air conditioning units that were recycling freezing outdoor air,” UCFPD posted on social media. “Repairs are underway, and all buildings are reopened. We will work directly with residents whose rooms were directly impacted to set them up with a temporary alternative option and academic flexibility.”
UCFPD said they don’t expect additional disruptions to essential utilities or services but staff will continue monitoring.
“Our priority throughout continues to be the safety and well-being of our residents. We recognize the inconvenience this caused and appreciate students’ patience and cooperation,” the updated post said.
UCF is asking residents who experience a housing-related concern to contact the UCF Work Control Center at 407-823-5223. Students who experienced direct damage related to this incident are encouraged to complete the Student of Concern form.
