On Thursday, Ecorse Community High School is set to recognize several college-bound football players with a special ceremony. It comes one day after each player formally signed their national letter of intent to play at the next level.
Headlined by a pair of all-News-Herald honorees in Cortney Powell and Jahlel Dunson, a total of five Red Raiders will be continuing their football-playing careers collegiately beginning next school year.Powell will be taking his talents to Northwood University. An all-region and first-team all-News-Herald recipient this past season, Powell led all local defensive linemen with 61 tackles, 10 of which were good for a loss of yards.
Dunson meanwhile will extend his football journey at Albion College next school year. A third-team all-area honoree, Dunson like Powell was a two-way player on the line. Ecorse head coach Larry Johnson described Dunson as the “heart and soul” of the team.
As far as other Raiders that will be playing at the next level, another two-way lineman in Aaron Collins will also stay in-state at Madonna University. Wide receiver and defensive back Michael Russ plans to stay local and play for Community Christian College in Detroit. And another wideout, Michael Putman Jr, will attend Culver-Stockton College in Missouri.
