{"id":1399798,"date":"2026-01-26T16:27:51","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T21:27:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thenewsherald.com\/?p=1399798&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=1399798"},"modified":"2026-01-26T16:28:12","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T21:28:12","slug":"man-found-guilty-of-murdering-cook-county-judge-in-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thenewsherald.com\/2026\/01\/26\/man-found-guilty-of-murdering-cook-county-judge-in-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"Man found guilty of murdering Chicago judge in 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A jury found a man guilty of murdering a Cook County judge, following a seven-day trial during which prosecutors said the assailants watched the judge and his girlfriend for days before shooting and killing him in a robbery attempt.<\/p>\n<p>Raymond Myles, 66, a longtime jurist at the county\u2019s main courthouse at 26th Street and California Avenue, died from his wounds after the shooting on April 10, 2017, outside his home on the Far South Side.<\/p>\n<p>The slaying, believed to be the first of a judge in more than three decades, shocked his colleagues in the local court system and resulted in a sweeping police investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Earl Wilson, 54, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/01\/13\/he-was-watching-them-murder-trial-opens-in-case-of-slain-cook-county-judge\/\">was convicted of murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery and armed robbery<\/a>\u00a0in the shooting in the 9400 block of South Forest Avenue. His son, Raymond Myles Jr., testified during the trial\u2019s first day, describing how he called home for a routine check-in and then learned his father had been killed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(I) broke down and cried,\u201d the younger Myles said.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson\u2019s attorneys denied that he was involved in the shooting, arguing that the motive for the attack centered around Smith\u2019s family. Smith\u2019s father was previously married to Myles\u2019 girlfriend, and was not happy about the divorce or her new boyfriend, they said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing about this case is what it seems,\u201d said Assistant Public Defender Takenya Nixon.<\/p>\n<p>Myles and his girlfriend rose before sunrise each morning to go to the gym before work, and were heading out that morning when they were confronted by a gunman who took Myles\u2019 girlfriend\u2019s gym bag.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said the shooters believed the girlfriend, Venita Parrish, carried money in the bag, but it had no cash in it that morning.<\/p>\n<p>It was still dark when Parrish and Myles left the home that morning, Parrish testified during the trial. That\u2019s when she saw \u2014 in her peripheral vision \u2014 someone lurking on the side of the brick house.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease, hurry,\u201d Parrish said on the recording of the 911 call. \u201cOh, my Lord, please hurry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She ran, then fell and started screaming, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018B\u2014-, shut up,\u2019\u201d she testified.<\/p>\n<p>Myles rushed outside and exchanged words with the attacker before he was shot and killed. According to prosecutors, he pleaded with the shooters, saying: \u201cYou don\u2019t have to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After his killing, court employees remembered Myles as a hardworking and friendly judge. He was a Cubs fan and wore a team jacket to work during the team\u2019s 2016 World Series run.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone here is devastated,\u201d then-presiding judge of the Criminal Division LeRoy K.
