Huron Township police recently took an 11-year-old student at Summit Academy North Middle School into custody for making an allegedly threatening remark, less than two months after two similar but unrelated incidents at the high school.<\/p>\n
Police said in a joint statement with the charter school that in the most recent incident, a sixth-grader allegedly made a threatening comment to another student on Thursday, Jan. 22.<\/p>\n\n
\u201cOur staff responded quickly, followed all safety protocols and coordinated with the Huron Township Police Department. At no time was there an ongoing safety risk to the school community,\u201d Superintendent Jason Hamstra said in the statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know that hearing about any type of threatening comment can be concerning, and we strive to be transparent when these incidents occur. These incidents also serve as an important reminder for all of us: Comments that might be intended as jokes or offhand remarks can easily be taken seriously and lead to significant consequences,” he said.<\/p>\n
Hamstra encouraged students to report anything unusual or concerning that they see or hear to any trusted adult at school.<\/p>\n
On Dec. 4, police said they took two juveniles into custody after two separate threats against other students were alleged at the high school.<\/p>\n
The accused students are ninth graders and are both 14 years old.<\/p>\n
“I think these things are happening a lot in schools, unfortunately,” Hamstra said, when asked if he thought it was unusual to have several such incidents over a short time.<\/p>\n
The high school and middle school are at 18601 Middlebelt Road, near Sibley Road.<\/p>\n
