{"id":1405079,"date":"2026-02-06T13:21:05","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T18:21:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thenewsherald.com\/?p=1405079&#038;preview=true&#038;preview_id=1405079"},"modified":"2026-02-06T15:43:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T20:43:20","slug":"georgia-elections-investigation-gabbard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thenewsherald.com\/2026\/02\/06\/georgia-elections-investigation-gabbard\/","title":{"rendered":"Bondi dismisses concerns over Gabbard\u2019s role in FBI search of Georgia election hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By DAVID KLEPPER and ERIC TUCKER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Attorney General Pam Bondi said Friday she is not worried that the involvement of Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard in an FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/why-fbi-seize-georgia-ballots-fulton-county-87300edb3ea86961c69132e6a2dfd6e8\">search of a Georgia election office<\/a> could taint the FBI\u2019s investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Her comments came a day after President Donald Trump offered a new explanation for why Gabbard was at the main elections hub in Georgia\u2019s most populous county last week, saying Bondi had requested her presence.<\/p>\n<p>Gabbard <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fbi-georgia-gabbard-elections-2a04ffe6aa317ed5be98c1cd60388992\">told lawmakers in a letter<\/a> this week that Trump had asked her to join the search, where agents seized <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-2020-election-false-claims-fraud-georgia-55786848ca20c02cbcf749ede2db8852\">hundreds of boxes containing ballots<\/a> and other documents <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fbi-georgia-elections-office-fulton-county-28e736037521b17197760d2394f0ab43\">related to the 2020 election<\/a> in Fulton County, Georgia. We are constantly together, as are the people behind us,\u201d Bondi said, with FBI Director Kash Patel standing nearby. \u201cWe constantly talk, we collaborate as a Cabinet. We\u2019re all extremely close. Know what each other, what we\u2019re doing at all times, pretty much to keep not only our country safe, but our world safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&#039;We&#039;re inseparable&#039;: Pam Bondi on Tulsi Gabbard being at Georgia election center\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5heF3f3geRs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Gabbard\u2019s involvement in the case, which is tied to Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-2020-election-false-claims-fraud-georgia-55786848ca20c02cbcf749ede2db8852\">disproven conspiracy theories about his 2020 loss,<\/a> has raised concerns from Democratic lawmakers about the blurring of lines between intelligence work, which typically focuses on foreign threats, and domestic law enforcement operations, like the FBI search.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats also fear her involvement may be laying the groundwork for the federal government to assert that the 2020 race that Trump lost was somehow tainted by foreign meddling or to <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fbi-georgia-elections-fulton-county-2020-ballots-532b6daf318c79c471cd7f145c9f2215\">cast doubt on the integrity of future elections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the event that criminal charges are brought, her presence \u2014 and her assertion that her attendance was requested by Trump as well as her acknowledged role in facilitating a call between FBI agents and the president \u2014 could open the door to defense arguments that the investigation was inherently politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a television interview days after the FBI search that he did not know why Gabbard was there and said she was \u201cnot part of the grand jury investigation.\u201d But he also has defended her as an important player in the administration\u2019s efforts to uphold election integrity.<\/p>\n<p>Gabbard said in her letter to lawmakers that she accompanied senior FBI officials \u201cunder my broad statutory authority to coordinate, integrate, and analyze intelligence related to election security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabbard\u2019s office did not immediately respond to questions about the changing explanations for her involvement.
